”For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God” [Romans 8:14]

David’s story in 2 Samuel 11 is a story of God’s mercy and grace but Uriah whose name means ~ Flame of Jah [the Lord] ~ assures us that faith is activated by truth and those who are led by the Spirit of truth are the children of God. In every story there are other players and every person within the web of relationships reveal a heart that’s either for self or for God—flesh or spirit—faith in God is action empowered by the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Active faith reveals wisdom and knowledge Uriah could have done the ‘right’ [normal] thing but it was the wrong time for pleasure, just as it was the wrong time for David to rest.  The difference?  Wisdom and knowledge.  Uriah said, “The Ark and the armies of Israel and Judah are living in tents, and Joab and my master’s men are camping in the open fields. How could I go home to wine and dine and sleep with my wife? I swear that I would never do such a thing.”  Priorities are proven by the choices we make and the spiritual gifts of wisdom and knowledge protect God’s children from doing the right thing at the wrong time.

Active faith is given discernment.   Temptation disguised as truth will continue to bait until a choice has been made.  David was driven by the lust of the flesh”…but Uriah didn’t go home. He slept that night at the palace entrance with the king’s palace guard.  The Spirit overcomes the flesh when integrity of heart is the ruling force.   The hidden agenda in the leader’s heart was powerless against a man of such integrity.  ” Then David invited him to dinner and got him drunk. But even then he couldn’t get Uriah to go home to his wife. Again he slept at the palace entrance with the king’s palace guard. “

There is more depth of meaning to—faith without works is dead—than the simple pitting being against doing–when faith is expressed by works even the ‘normal’ next right thing expresses faith that is guided by God’s Sovereignty and governed by the Spirit of truth.
