“Therefore, let us fear if, while a promise remains of entering His rest, any one of you may seem to have come short of it.” Hebrews 4:1

To believe in the finished work of Christ, one must rest in it, not trying, but trusting.  Belief activates God’s Word because one is resting in what has already been provided.  To succeed in the Christian life or profit from what Christ has already provided, what has been heard must be united with faith.  Faith that is active is the only real faith there is.  James says that faith without works is dead, but living faith must flow from rest that is real because it resides in God.  Known as the “sabbath rest,” it is the gift given for man and reflects his faith.

After a season of wonderful but hectic activity, it was time to slow down; thence, I recently spend a few days at a monastery, coming aside to rest, restore, refresh and renew my relationship with Christ.  It was a wonderful gift and privilege to be able to do so.  Whenever the Spirit leads us beside still waters and gives a place of silence and solitude, it is a great blessing. However, to stay in such a place would be fruitless when our calling is to go into all the world and make disciples.  Life at the very least requires more people around us, interacting, sharing who we are and who our God is.  Without interaction there is no life for life lives when given away.

Not everyone can go to a monastery, so how does this life of resting nurture itself?  We all have the same amount of time.  What we do with that time is in our hands.  Our schedule is the reflection of our life.  When we create a balance wheel of life, spiritual development is not a “piece” of the wheel; it is not a “slice of the pie”; it is the hub—the center-piece.  Christ at the center will create the balance and the circumference will allow room to strengthen the “rest” of the activity.
