”Hear, O My people, and I will admonish you–…if you would listen to Me!” [Psalm 81:8]
How many times have you heard the words—if they had only listened! Many a parent knows the heartbreak of a stubborn, turning a deaf ear child who is lost not only to their voices but to the sounds of heaven.
To practice life in Christ one must first learn to listen—all around the sound of creation teaches us to listen and it reveals the truth, that it is not enough to hear spiritual truth or even to have our own spiritual insights. Every aspect of what happens to us must become part of a listening, learning experience. Then we can hear the voice of God in all things for the Holy Spirit uses all things to reach man’s heart.
To begin, read the Word but expect the Spirit to bring it alive—listen to others to glean what they have heard and learned by listening. Listen without preconceived notions for God desires to warn you of things you have forgotten, to counsel you against turning your foot to the left or to the right—or to protect you from on-coming danger.
“‘He that hath ear to hear, let him hear.’ Before we can hear certain things, we must be trained. Our disposition determines what we listen for; and when Jesus alters the disposition, He gives us the power to hear as He hears.” [Oswald Chambers] Jesus said, “…His own sheep follow him, for they know his voice.” [John 10:4] What are you hearing?
