“After they went up to the Valley of Eshcol and viewed the land, they discouraged the Israelites from entering the land the Lord had given them” [Numbers 14:29]

Here’s another choice and danger when you are in the valley—discouragement.  Discouragement is a seed of unbelief, if not stopped, like a worm it will eat away your faith.  Even mustard seed faith can speak miracles into existence. “…I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain,’ Move from here to there’ and it will move.  Nothing will be impossible for you.” [Matthew 17:20]

So beware, there is discouragement within and discouragement without.  These guys actually visited the place God had given them, but chose not to stay.  Their faith failed and so did they and then they encouraged others to join them.  The problem was when they settled just for a visit their reason kicked in and the problem looked bigger than their God!  Because of doubt and unbelief a whole generation could not increase their territory or fulfill their destiny, they ‘saw’ the blessing, but failed to ‘live in’ the blessing.

This is what Paul meant when he said, “In Him we live and move and have our being” [Acts 17:28a] The only way to follow wholeheartedly is to step into His promises and take up residence!  Eshcol refers to ‘other fruit’—it was bigger than they had ever seen before, “We went to the land …it truly flows with milk and honey and here is the fruit” [Numbers 13:27], but… there were problems. Problems will either hinder your journey or help you succeed.

You have stepped into a new year full of valleys, with the right perspective they can be full of increase and possibilities, the choice is yours, become discouraged and doubt or take the land and live by faith!
