“Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell facedown to the ground before the ark of the Lord, remaining there till evening…” Joshua 7:6
So you have failed. So you’ve learned a lesson. “Catching the wind” is not faultless. For example, Joshua’s defeat brought humility, the defeat at Ai proving to him that victory goes to the one in submission to God. From that place of certainty, Joshua could go forward in victory, defeating the enemy because the God of Israel fought for Israel!
Living in certainty in uncertain times is possible, but often certainty is found only when all seems lost, when you taste the defeat of your own self effort and humbly recognize the sovereignty of God. The writer of Ecclesiastes knew this truth when he wrote, “As you do not know the path of the wind, or how the body is formed in a mother’s womb so you cannot understand the work of God the Maker of all things” (Eccl. 11:5).
When the battle was over, Joshua often returned to where he had begun – Gilgal, a name which means “the place of healing.” The end of the day, the end of the battle, the end of the task, the end of self effort is the time to return to Gilgal. The place of victory for you and for me is the Cross—the place where victory began and victory lives. “But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him” (2 Corinthians 2:14). Step by step, Joshua received instructions and, always, the word of encouragement, “Do not be afraid of them…I will give all of them over to you, slain!”
