“What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? “ James 2:14
Visible, tangible, active, alive — a life fully engaged with the plan and purpose of God looks to something new and different, not longing for what was, not yearning for the past like Lot’s wife (Luke 17:32), but desiring something yet not seen.
Flights of fancy or “catching the wind” are nothing unless they produce faithful service. No deeds? Prayer and well wishes are not enough to “catch the wind”! James speaks of action that meets the physical needs of others. It sounds as though action is necessary if salvation is to maintain life and joy–the very atmosphere of “catching the wind.”
Unity between faith and deeds is necessary. James is talking about the need of congruency—doing what you say and saying what you believe. The pathway to “catching the wind” is full of the “little things”: the random acts of kindness, the seeing a need and filling it. They often lead in the direction of the impossible, where God waits to reveal the wind of His power.
Jesus took the time to listen to a stranger, unaware that something different was about to happen. His Father’s will is stated in Matthew 15:24: ”I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.” It was in meeting the woman’s need that the boundary of His ministry was multiplied! Suddenly there was extraordinary change! The Gentile nation came to Him and received healing, salvation and deliverance. The wind of the Spirit took Him into the next phase of His ministry—beyond the familiar faces of His own nation.
