There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven.”  [Ecclesiastes 3:1]

Did you ever watch quietly as the garden swing, ropes and seat bouncing in the breeze suddenly became still and  silently came to rest—one last shudder as if giving a sigh that the joy of service was now over.  Just moments ago a tussle haired, vibrantly alive child pulled on the ropes giving the command to go.   Leaning far-back, breeze blowing through her hair, feet thrust out before her as if commanding all of nature to succumb to her desire to climb higher and higher she filled the air with laughter.   Just as quickly the seat returns to the lower place and snaps as if to resist another climb.

Now the swing is empty the child vanishes as if she were never there.  Somewhere on the other side of the garden life that was full and free ran to discover, and uncover what her eye had caught as she swung to catch the clouds—whatever she saw had quickened her desire to come up close, to see if what she had caught a glimpse of was really real— the swing gently swayed back and forth empty of its precious cargo until finally it was still and stopped and rested!

This was yesterday; a yesterday that seemed like just moments ago yet the young woman walking slowly back across the lawn tells you it wasn’t….it were a life time ago.  What she saw as the swing climbed higher and higher had been a great adventure—things and places far beyond the garden had been conquered; held close and loved until the excitement waned, the life diminished and time had brought a different season.

“There is a purpose in every life that is in God’s keeping of which we know little, but which He will fulfill if we let Him rightly relate us to Himself” [Oswald Chambers]
