“…In the world you will have tribulations; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world”  [John 16:33b]

Every set-back has a come-back!  Not sure who said it first but the ring of truth is so loud it echo’s the first proclamation!  ‘He is not here He is risen’.

This is the birth place and power of every come-back!   Paul had learned what this meant and said, – I have learned to be content whether I abase or abound.

Recently I had a health problem — again!   Then came the voices… slow down… remember how old you are – learn to be content in not doing and just being.   Well if my contentment was in the being and not doing I would have never done what I have done.  My contentment is in Christ and He has said… ’go’.  The last I heard ‘go’ is a verb – a point of action.

I have ‘learned’ to be content laying on a cot in the jungle suffering with malaria, or being sick in India, or lost in Africa, or simply being alone on the mission field!  I’ve learned to be content when I was being threatened with a knife at my throat by a drunken sinner.   I’ve learned to be content when everyone was clapping and shining the light on me, when ministering to members of the richest family in America. and me thinking, how on earth did I get here?

Be careful of those that would have you avoid crises, risk taking or doing what God has told you to do.  You won’t go to hell, but you will risk not living at all and miss the greatest blessing of the awesome presence of God.  God meets us all in our crisis to love and empower us with ‘come back’ power.

We will never live a life without sickness, failure, and all kinds of set-backs; either God uses them to infuse His resurrection power or we sink into apathy.  God is the supreme example of come-back that when embraced gives us ears to hear and eyes to see He is our dwelling place of contentment.   Success or failure is not the goal, in Him we live and move and have our being and find true contentment!
