“For it is we who are the circumcision, we who worship by the Spirit of God, who glory in Christ Jesus…” [Philippians 3:3]
What is the circumcision? Circumcision means—circular—a cutting around. Circumcision in the time of Abraham was a physical circumcision—it was a sign of a covenant people—a people ‘set apart’ for God—a people of purity, a people that would maintain sexual purity and thereby bring forth a nation known as the chosen people of God.
Today our circumcision as the chosen people of God is of the heart. ”…circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter, whose praise is not from men but from God” [Romans 2:29]
What then is the sign of circumcision in our generation? According to the Apostle Paul it is Worship.
Worship by the Spirit. “God is sheer being itself—Spirit. Those who worship him must do it out of their very being, their spirits, their true selves, in adoration.” [John 4:24 TM] “Worship is pictured best in Isaiah when the young prophet became aware of the Father; aware of his own limitations; aware of the Father’s directives; and aware of the task at hand” [David Julius—Isaiah 6] Worship is full of mystery, if we take the mystery out of worship it becomes a formless void, a meaningless exercise without life. Worship is the vortex through which we have been invited, a doorway through which we hear the words, “Come up here, and I will show you things which must take place after this” [Revelation 4:1] It is to enter the courtroom of heaven and hear the Kingdom agenda.
Glory in Christ. This glory is the stamp of registration within you—the seal of ownership has been burned into your soul. ”This mystery has been kept in the dark for a long time, but now it’s out in the open. God wanted everyone, not just Jews, to know this rich and glorious secret inside and out, regardless of their background, regardless of their religious standing. The mystery in a nutshell is just this: Christ is in you; therefore you can look forward to sharing in God’s glory. It’s that simple” [Colossians 1:27]
