“And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.”  [Philippians 4:19]

It had been a trying time in Africa—shortly after our arrival I was totally wiped out by malaria.  Day after day I hung between what to me seemed the edge of life and death.  Evening came and  Margreth my nurse, who had faithfully cared for me during my time of sickness journeyed to my lodging to give me injections.  On the fifth day wanting to show my gratitude I pressed into her hand a few African shillings.  Not wishing to take it and with tears in her eyes she asked why I had done that.    I tried to communicate my gratitude and desire to give.  With deep longing she turned and looking into my eyes and in broken English implored me…then give me what I need.

Touched by her anguish and humbled by my own inadequacy I said…”what do you need?”  Her reply pierced my heart as she whispered, “I need prayer”.   I asked, what do you need prayer for and she replied…pray my husband will be saved!

Wherever we are in this world there is one desperate need—for men to know Christ!  A cry for those that know Him, to love others enough to pray, for family, friends and fellow travelers.  To give them what they need, to pray that they may know Christ!

Is this not what it means to …”…Go into all the world and preach the gospel…” The Lord spoke to David and made a promise.  ”Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession.”  Our witness begins in a place called prayer.

Pray for Margreth and her husband whose name sounded like Leonard.  “Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful. And pray also for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ…”  [Colossians 4:2-3]
