“…when he was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him” [Luke 15:20]
Have you ever found yourself on the wrong road? You’re traveling along when suddenly you get this niggling feeling you missed your turn? In England there is a saying that once you stop and ask for directions you probably will hear—“you will have to go back on yourself!”
Which means go back the way you came. This of course was before GPS and the sound of …I am rerouting you.
Spiritually it is so much easier, so simple—Jesus is always moving forward yet is always where you are, the way of wisdom may elude you but never Christ. Just one ratchet of turning and His providential grace provides the power of life changing adjustments. It is not rocket science! its moment by moment mountain moving miraculous grace—that is the picture of the early church—getting it wrong, going in the wrong direction is often a church getting ‘too big for its britches’ and forgetting where it came from and why it arrived on the wrong road powerless and in desperate need.
When we have forgotten to wait on God, He is always waiting for us. No head shaking, finger pointing or guilt ridden “I told you so”. Don’t allow pride to keep you going in the wrong direction, or being unwilling to stop and ask for directions. Hear the Spirit say—go back on yourself—go back to the future by returning to where you began. “Stand in the ways and see, And ask for the old paths, where the good way is, And walk in it; Then you will find rest for your souls.” [Jeremiah 6:16]
