“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven…a time to be silent and a time to speak…” [Ecclesiastes 3:1, 7]

Bite your tongue!  We all know those moments; they are like the small hinge that opens a huge door.

Words unchecked break the bridge of relationships in a millisecond, empowered by unleashed emotion they ruin the fabric of life, communication is blocked and destiny can be missed.  James says, “We all stumble in many ways.  If anyone is never at fault in what he says he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check.” [3:2]

According to the preacher words have within them life or death and silence is golden.  Jesus when facing the most volatile moment of life and destiny, chose not to speak, “Then Pilate asked him, Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?  But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor.” [Matthew: 13-14]

We often think our witness is all about sharing the Word, which means verbalizing what we know, but what of the witness of silence!  These leaders were amazed at the self-control that kept Jesus quiet.  Then again we know that Jesus as God Son did nothing of Himself, “…he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.” [John 5:19]  Even the ability to ‘stop’ talking is gifted to us through the Holy Spirit, the same One that empowered Jesus.  He alone can create the fruit of the Spirit which is given to them that ‘bite the tongue’.
