“The spirit stood still, but I could not discern the appearance of it. A form was before my eyes; there was silence and then I heard a voice, saying” [Job 4:16 AMP]
Recently I watched the movie ‘Copying Beethoven’…Anna the young woman assisting him was grasping to understand the secret of Beethoven’s magnificent gift when he turned to her and said—the secret is in the silence—only in the silence can the soul be touched and the voice of God be heard. Recently I have been reminded of the value of silence, solitude and the simplicity of walking with God, that comes out of the silence of seeking a quiet place.
Job said…there was silence and I heard…” Hearing the constant myriad of voices of our world while trying to discern His voice, is at best a risk and at worst disastrous unless there are times of silence ~ when a disciple recognizes the voice of the Shepherd in silence the soul’s sensitivity is strengthened to hear a gentle whisper. In times when great cost is set before your eyes and differing voices fill the air of your soul, the gentle voice will whisper, ”For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” [Matthew 16:26]
This world is a noisy place—if you are to hear from heaven and rest in the flow of the source of life then silence is golden and quietness a necessity. “Quietude, which some men cannot abide because it reveals their inward poverty, is a palace of cedar to the wise, for along its hallowed courts the King in His beauty deigns to walk” [Charles H. Spurgeon] When was the last time you heard the sound of silence and had the awesome awareness… you walked with the King of Kings?
