”…have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust” [2 Peter 1:4]
Corruption that is revealed in public is not what happened yesterday, corruption begins as a seed—it cannot be routed out—cauterized or cleansed. Left to grow it will extend its ugliness for all to see and so break through the hidden places. When what is corruptible receives the incorruptible seed, purity is possible and the inner life protected. Peter said we are called to, ”an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled…” [1 Peter 1:4]
In Lord of the Rings, Froto had in his possession the ring of power. The journey he had embarked on would constantly pressure him to either; have it stolen from him, be deceived into letting others control it, or, if he placed the ring on his own finger he could take ownership.
It is a parable of the gift of life, given to man as the power of choice—fuel for the inward journey that every man must take. It is the power that energizes the choices we make. “…to those who believed in his name, he gave the right [power] to become children of God” [John 1:12]
Man is only the steward of what God has placed in his possession when he takes ‘ownership’ of what belongs to God corruption grows and defiles everything he touches. “For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him…therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity…” [Romans 1:21] When the one who possesses the gift takes ownership of the gift then purity is lost Paul said, “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.” [2 Corinthians 4:7]
