“To what can I compare this generation?…”  [Matthew 11:18a]

Many years ago Flip Wilson a well- known comedian coined the phrase—“what you see is what you get!”  Mr. Wilson put a basic principle into present vernacular—Jesus was saying a similar thing.  Look at what people are doing to know who they are—Jesus added to it by saying what you see them doing displays their level of spiritual maturity.

In this case what Jesus saw was immaturity  — “They are like children sitting in the marketplaces, and calling out to others”  The problem with spiritual immaturity is that it is unable to judge character, there is a lack of discernment to see people for who they really are.  John the Baptist was thought to be demon possessed—Jesus was thought to be a glutton and a drunkard. A sign of the times is that men will call evil good and good evil!

But Jesus gave us a gauge—at the end of the day Jesus said, ”Wisdom is proved right by her actions. ” It matters little what people say because what they do speaks louder than their words.  Spiritual maturity is the ability to rightly discern Godly wisdom and “Spiritual maturity is not reached by the passing of the years, but by obedience to the will of God” [Oswald chambers]
