“…But if you just use my words in Bible studies and don’t work them into your life, you are like a stupid carpenter who built his house on the sandy beach. When a storm rolled in and the waves came up, it collapsed like a house of cards.” [Matthew 7:26-27 The Message]
To be alive the Word of God must be acted upon—the power of the word is always in demonstration not doctrine! David the shepherd boy could face his giant because of experience. “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” [1 Samuel 17:37 NIV]
Gene Getz says, “Bible study by itself will not produce spirituality. In fact, it will produce carnality if it isn’t applied and practiced. The truth is, study without service produces people with judgmental attitudes and spiritual pride. And the more they think they know, the prouder they become.”
The difference between spiritual growth and spiritual stagnation is turning study into service. James teaches us that faith without works is dead—but application to life will change your view point—a giant is simply an opportunity to demonstrate the greatness of God! David faced the giant by remembering when God had empowered him to slay the lion and the bear. Moses told the Israelites the same principle, “Remember today what you have learned about the Lord through your experiences with him…” [Deuteronomy 11:2 TEV]
If you haven’t had the experience of applying God’s Word, start today—ask the Lord for an opportunity to serve—apply what you are studying—one small step for man is a giant step in God.
