Be Still and Know that I am God “[Psalm 46:10]

The voices of the world are nothing compared to all the voices within—the moment you attempt to ‘be still’ a gathering storm of uninvited thoughts will fill your quietness.  Use your imagination to watch them travel past like twisted tumbleweed, tossed by wind across the barren places of your life. Hold fast to the borders of quietness until the deep rhythm of God’s silence is heard.

I need discipline said one disciple to another—discipline of the mind, discipline to be still and hear the language of God.  “Silence is God’s first language; everything else is a poor translation, in order to hear the language, we must learn to be still and to rest in God” [Thomas Keating—Invitation to Love]

It’s a done deal said the disciple—as they rushed out of stillness to ‘do’ the million thoughts that crash and crush the boundaries of their quiet place. We are never free from the snare of doing—it is in the doing that life is given away, but when the doing overtakes the being the life that is given is no life at all but a poor imitation.  It cannot restore or refresh the barren places for it has given nothing and bears no fruit.

Take time to ‘be still’ this morning, the doing will come later and bear the mark of spending time with your creator who alone gives life. Be those of whom it is said, ”…they took note that these men had been with Jesus”  [Acts 4:13]
