” Examine and test and evaluate your own selves to see whether you are holding to your faith and showing proper fruits of it. Test and prove yourselves [not Christ]” [2 Corinthians 13:5]
When things are collapsing all around us it’s easy to point the finger and play the blame game—even to consider God as the culprit! Paul gives a two part self-assessments for such times.
Examine—It means to observe or analyze carefully. James suggests we linger in front of the mirror ”Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in the mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like” [James 1:23]
Evaluate—Means to ascertain the value or worth. So what of worth is growing in your garden? ”Land that drinks in the rain…and produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless…” [Hebrews 6:7-8]
I will add a third part—Eliminate—to leave out or remove negative elements. ”…put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds;…” [Ephesians 4:22-23]
Recently I read an interesting story about gravitational pull. Apparently most of the fuel that is used by spaceships traveling to the moon is consumed in just getting them beyond earth’s gravity. After they have done so, NASA scientists count on lunar gravity to pull the spaceship toward the moon. Similarly, it is times of eliminating the negatives that requires most of our energy, moving us away from our former way of life. The higher call of God has enough power to compel us toward the finish line.
