“Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him.” Romans 5:9
My heart fell a little when I saw her in the Sunday group at the local jail. She had “done her time,” but here she was back again. She was and had been faithfully studying the Word — was sure she would not go the wrong way again. However, she had not been released yet and, when she went before the judge, she found there was still one unfilled requirement. Although it was nothing serious, it had to be resolved before she could go home, a free person.
Our lesson for the day was the story of Cain and Abel, a story about attitude, about God’s requirement of the shedding of blood. It teaches that life is in the blood and asserts the truth that God Himself has once and for all met the requirement through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. In doing so, He claims the right to have all authority, an authority that requires belief in who He is and what He says.
In her struggle the lady couldn’t understand why Abel’s sacrifice was accepted and Cain’s was not. I shared the stories beginning with Adam and Eve, who thought to cover themselves with leaves only to find out it was not enough: it would take the blood of a slain animal to meet God’s requirement. Yet the lady was not convinced that without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness of sins.
To know the finality of the sacrifice of Jesus brings the knowledge of total absolution and freedom from all and every issue. But to know this freedom, one also knows the sacrifice reveals sovereignty and sovereignty requires acceptance of His Word, His Will, His Way.
