For to us a child is born, to us a Son is given…” [Isaiah 9:6]

Step back, step away, step around—but keep your distance from the commerce and activity designed to hide the reason for the season.  All the rhetoric, all the rushing and all the retailing has nothing to do with Christmas—only love!

Love that reduced itself to a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes—love that grew in simplicity—love that can so easily be swallowed up in the glare and glitzy promotion of ‘things’.

Christmas is in the ordinary—the simple acts of kindness—the hug, the smile—the word that encourages and the Word that became one of us on Christmas  eve.  ”The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us…”  [John 1:14a]

Let love come down—let it reduce itself to the ordinary simple things where the real Christmas dwells.   Christmas in a time when there were only ‘little things’—an orange—hair bows, pens, pencils and plum-pudding—Christmas carols, home made cake, candles glowing—and children believing that the Spirit of Christmas is the greatest gift of all.

Jesus said,  “I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”   [Matthew 18:3]

I remember the joy of receiving a granddaughter at Christmas time, a long awaited baby, a miracle child.  A child we watched and waited for.  I remember the sheer joy…yet nothing compares to the JOY of receiving Christ and celebrating His birthday year after year.  And the childlike JOY continues.
